Once off the ground, the Two Eagles balloon team will attempt to break the world gas balloon distance record of 5,208 miles (8,383 km) by flying across the Pacific Ocean from Japan to North America. They may also be able to break the gas balloon duration record of nearly 138 hours (5 days, 18 hours) set in 1978 during the first successful transatlantic balloon crossing by the crew of Double Eagle II. The team can launch as late as February 10, so there is still time for weather systems to develop that would provide better conditions for a safe and successful flight.
